Tramping

Ramping is the best way of coming to grips with New Zealand's natural beauty. It gives the traveler the greater satisfaction of being a participant rather than just a spectator. The country has literally thousands of km of tracks, many well marked, some only a line on the maps. What makes tramping especially attractive is the hundreds of huts available, allowing trampers to avoid the weight of tents and cooking gear. Many tracks are graded so that they are easily covered by those with only a moderate amount of fitness and little or no experience. Many travelers, once having tried a track, then gear the rest of their trip in New Zealand to traveling from one track to another, with side trips to see the 'in' sights.

Huts are usually placed three to four hours apart. Huts usually have beds for up to 24 with thick foam mattresses on bunks. Tracks are administered by rangers and wardens; the former are permanent staff, normally well trained and very knowledgeable. The wardens are temporary; usually employed for the summer season to keep an eye on huts and maintain the track for a km in each direction. Once on the track be careful. In good weather most of the tracks are safer than walking around town. What can make them dangerous is New Zealand's unique weather. A glorious walk in perfect conditions suddenly becomes a fight for survival in blizzard conditions. An easy two hour walk to the next but turns into a grim struggle against wind, wet and cold over a washed out track and swollen rivers.
