Canterbury Plains
From Christchurch, the flat Canterbury Plains extend inland to the foothills of the Southern Alps. Viewed from above, the plains form a vast rural patchwork of green and gold farmlands, criss crossed by country roads and cut by broad rivers. The plains are New Zealand's granary, a rich agricultural region renowned for its wheat, wool, and livestock. Sheep and cattle farms abound. More than a century ago, Australian sheepmen began grazing their flocks on the open plains, and today Canterbury lamb has a worldwide reputation. On the big, isolated sheep stations in the high country, sheep are raised for wool, rather than for meat.

The main route across the plains is Highway 1, which crosses the Rakaia River on the country's longest bridge. Massive trees shade the brick buildings of Ashburton, the district's farming center. Anglers fish the Rakaia, Ashburton, and Rangitata rivers for salmon and sea run trout.
Other routes from Christchurch head west across the plains to Windwhistle, gateway to the Rakaia Gorge and Canterbury lakes. Gouged out by long departed glaciers, these mountain lakes attract local sports enthusiasts. Lake Coleridge is popular for fishing and boating. In winter, tiny Lake Ida freezes to become a natural outdoor ice rink. There's skiing at Mount Hutt and in the Craigieburn Mountains.
One of New Zealand's best ski areas, Mount Hutt is only 104 km/65 miles from Christchurch. From its slopes, skiers enjoy panoramic views over the Canterbury Plains.
Skiing begins in May and continues through November. Whether you're a beginner or an expert, you'll find runs suitable for your level of ability. Rental equipment and ski school lessons are available at the area. Advanced skiers can arrange for guided helicopter skiing in the surrounding basins. There's transportation to the resort from Methven and Christchurch.
Methven, 84 km/52 miles from Christchurch, is a fast growing resort town serving the Mount Hutt skifield; it's also a base for mountaineering, fishing, and other back country activities. Jet boat and raft trips travel through the scenic gorge of the nearby Rakaia River.
