Boating on the Avon

It's pleasant to walk along the river, but the best way to enjoy the Avon's charm is by boat. You can hire a canoe, pedal boat, or rowboat any day at Antigua Boatsheds, facing the shallow river on Cambridge Terrace near Rolleston Avenue.

You step off the sloping wooden dock and lower yourself into your craft, then leisurely venture upstream under drooping willows past the Botanic Gardens and Hagley Park. In spring, you glide beneath blossoming trees; in autumn, golden leaves cast reflections in the water. Your fellow paddlers range from preteens to grandparents. On sunny weekends, picnicking families relax along the grassy bank and watch the passing parade.
